Thoughts on Other SEOs

Here’s a inside-SEO post, for those who might be interested in such a thing:

It’s incredible how much spammy gray-hat behavior is STILL being advocated and implemented by professional SEOs.

Whether it’s keyword spam, unnatural phrasing, or utilizing link building networks, this kind of nonsense has been around since I started in SEO nearly twenty years ago.

The reality is the same today as it was back then: this kind of approach may not ruin your rankings immediately, but rest assured that a reckoning is coming and it won’t be long.

Google is continually updating its algorithm to seek out and punish search engine manipulation tactics.

The ONLY way to do smart SEO is to put quality first. That means no keyword spam, no unnatural phrasing, and no links that don’t have a reason to naturally occur.

When I was hired to create strategy for State Farm corporate headquarters, our only real concern was creating SEO that was immune to algorithm updates. I use that same approach with my clients in Evansville and they’re dominating their local industries.

But you know the best part?

My clients will still be sitting in the top ranking spots five or ten years from now, because no algorithm update is ever going to hurt them.

Don’t indulge in spammy gray-hat tactics no matter what your SEO tells you. Look at the Fortune 500 industry leaders and follow their example. Good marketing practices beat out search engine marketing “tricks” every time.
