What should you use for your website? Understanding Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, and WordPress.
Website builders promise an easy launch, but easy today means limited tomorrow. Learn why we caution clients against website builders and usually use WordPress for our web design services here at Accuracy SEO.
Wix, Squarespace, and Shopify spend millions on ads promising a beautiful website in an afternoon. The drag-and-drop editors really are easy, and for a hobby site or a weekend project, they’re perfectly fine.
But for a business site that needs to rank in Google and grow for years? I’ve seen how this story ends, and it usually ends with a rebuild.
Over the course of my SEO career I’ve audited sites built on just about every platform out there. When a builder site lands on my desk, the conversation almost always includes a list of things we simply can’t fix. Not “expensive to fix.” Can’t fix. The platform decides what you’re allowed to change, and no amount of SEO budget gets around that.
Each platform has its own set of walls, and you won’t see them until you run into one:
If you don’t have a lot of experience working on websites, these might sound like small compromises. But if you’ve worked with WordPress (which has none of these problems) you’ll groan when you have to work on a website builder site.
There are many advantages to WordPress, but here’s the killer feature that isn’t even close to being matched by website builders: the official WordPress plugin library holds roughly 60,000 free plugins, with thousands of premium options beyond that. Plugins are little downloadable programs that add extra functionality to your website. They’re usually free and can do just about anything you will ever need from a website.
Need online booking? There are multiple plugins to choose from. Need recipe cards, event calendars, membership areas, review displays, gift cards, or multilingual content? There are plugins for all of them, and usually several competing options at different price points.
If you sell online, you can use the WooCommerce plugin to turn WordPress into a full e-commerce store with none of Shopify’s added transaction fees. (I won’t even go into WooCommerce here, because it’s an entire library in itself with more features than any website builder.)
Most builders have app stores too, but the shelves are thinner and nearly everything bills monthly. Plenty of Shopify stores end up paying more for apps than for Shopify itself!
The plugin library also matters for SEO. Tools like Yoast and Rank Math open up control over titles, schema, redirects, and sitemaps that builder platforms only partially expose. We use these tools on a daily basis and they’re a big part of making SEO flexible, detailed, and easy to implement.
Builder templates look great in the demo gallery. But when you try to move a section, adjust spacing, or build a layout the template designer didn’t anticipate, you find the edges of the sandbox fast. Squarespace in particular is famous for gorgeous templates that fight you the moment you want to customize, but no website builders give you complete granular design control.
WordPress, on the other hand, gives you pretty much 100% control of every pixel. We use a page builder called Elementor that lets you fine-tune every section, column, and breakpoint, so your site looks right on desktop, tablet, and phone. You can even serve entirely different images and layouts depending on what device your visitor is using.
But granular control doesn’t mean you have to start from scratch. There are hundreds of premium Elementor template kits covering nearly every industry, and unlike builder templates, they’re a starting point rather than a cage. You can swap sections between kits, restyle anything, or even modify a template into something completely different over time.
This page was designed in Elementor, but many of the pages on our site use WordPress’s standard page builder called Gutenberg. These days we recommend WordPress with Elementor for most client builds.
You may not realize you need this, but when something breaks you’re going to be REALLY missing these features.
Squarespace has no real backup system, so one bad edit can become permanent. Shopify doesn’t back up your store either, and its own documentation points you toward CSV exports and third-party apps instead.
WordPress makes this very easy. Most hosts run automatic daily backups, and restoring your site takes a couple of clicks, so when something screws up you can restore to a working version in five minutes. You can keep your own off-site copies too, for extra peace of mind.
Backups aren’t the only safety net. WordPress supports staging sites too. A staging site is a private copy of your website where you can test a redesign, a new plugin, or a major content change without touching the live version. When everything checks out, you push it live with one click. None of the big builders offer anything that compares.
If you want to dramatically redesign your site or make major changes that are going to take weeks or months to rollout, there is no replacement for a staging site.
Spend ten minutes in any small business forum and you’ll find owners who wish they’d never signed up for a website builder. The pattern repeats over and over: the site launched quickly, the traffic never came, and now moving to something better feels overwhelming.
I’ve taken many of those calls myself. A business owner three years into a Wix subscription wants a redesign or special features, and I have to explain that the platform is part of the problem and there’s no export button to make leaving easy.
If you’re choosing a platform for a new site, or you’re stuck on a builder and weighing your options, contact us before committing to another year of monthly fees. A short conversation now may help you avoid a full rebuild later.
With WordPress, your site fully belongs to you. You can host it anywhere, export it anytime, and keep every subscription in your own name. Builder sites live on rented land. Leave Wix or Squarespace and your design, pages, and features stay behind.
Builders cover SEO basics, but not much more. WordPress gives you full control over site structure, schema, redirects, and page speed. Pair WordPress with smart SEO and you'll have no artificial limits on growth.
Start with a five-page brochure site and grow into a massive business with a booking system and full eCommerce capabilities. With 60,000+ plugins, WordPress adapts as your business changes and allows you to do just about anything with your website.
